About the Author
Lou Hudson is a fourth generation Texan whose Lone Star roots trace back to the 1850s. The Fort Worth native attended the University of Texas at Arlington when it was still Arlington State College. Forced to become a print journalist because Yankees could not understand his speech, he spent 35 years reporting and editing at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

I bought this book, as well as Texas Speak Advanced Course, & personally, I think this one is WAY better. Before I moved here, I called a realtor & said I was looking at Del Valle, which I pronounced "del-VAH-yeh," which would be, uh, Spanish. She said, "No, this is TEXAS. We say Del VALLEY!" (HA!) So, I really got a kick out of the "correct" pronunciations of the town names, not to mention the "rules" regarding proper cowboy boot and/or hat wear.

I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because: I have lived in the South my entire life, & some of the terms defined in this book are NOT uniquely Texan. (gasp!) "Y'all," for example. EVERY Southern person from ditch diggers to Ph.D.'s says "y'all." Likewise with "fixin' to," among others.

I also think "heighty" is the phonetic spelling of "howdy," & I think that because I SAY it all the time. ;)

Overall, though, I thought this book was a pure-D HOOT, I tell you what, & have bought several copies to give away at Christmas.

Note that it comes with both 3.5" and 5.25" diskettes.
Nowadays desktops do not feature 3.5" drives so you'll need buy (or borrow) USB version of this drive to get easy access to the source code.

A Wide Range of Functions

I have used programs from this book for theta functions and for spheroidal wavefunctions, or rather for the corresponding eigenvalues. For the theta functions I could not find equivalent programs elsewhere. A program for the spheroidal wavefunctions from another recipe book returned erroneous values for certain parameter sets. Baker's code, on the other hand, appeared to have been carefully checked, and functioned correctly (as far as I could determine) for a wide range of parameter values. I had no great difficulty with compilation when I used Turbo C, in which apparently the programs were developed; however, Watcom C choked on both. The problems were minor, or should have been, except that the code read as though it were intended for a "most-confusing-C-code" contest.
Baker does not have a table of dependencies in his book, but a DOS executable which is included will give the information, more or less, while engendering homicidal feelings toward the author!
If the code were cleaned up the book would be a "must-have" for physicists and applied mathematicians.
This book is not for the novice! However, if you need accurate values for the less-common transcendental functions, and are comfortable with C-language programming, then you will *certainly* want a copy.

A bazillion functions but poorly written

This book has an enormous number of mathematical functions implemented. Unfortunately, the quality of the code is poor. However, if you buy a copy of A&S, you can use the code as a starting point and it would be faster than writing it from scratch. If you can find the routines you need in the Cephes collection at netlib, I would strongly encourage you to use those instead. On the other hand, there are many routines in this book that I have not seen implementations for elsewhere.

Perfect ending to one of my favorite series!

NOTE: this review is being posted a couple of days after I finished the book BECAUSE I HAD TO READ IT AGAIN as soon as I finished it. Yep! It was that good.

I finally got my hands on the fifth and final book in this series! At the same time I'm very sad to see it go. Very, very sad. At least I can reread this series! (as I'm currently doing)

This is Shannon's book, though we get cameos from all the previous characters. Yay! Shannon thinks she needs to be turned into a vampire, and there are a few single male vampires that are happy to do this for her. But is that what's best for her? And why does Asher keep looking at her like that? Ahhh... there's so much I can say but I don't want to spoil any of it! Does Shannon have her own abilities that will help the others? I'm not gonna tell you! You have to read it yourself.

This is the end of the series, and author C. C. Wood definitely did this series right. We have suspense, we have action, we have steamy scenes and humor, and this book wrapped up the entire series nicely giving us enough closure while leaving us wanting just a little more. (Maybe if we bug the author, we can get a couple novellas to continue these characters, huh C.C. Wood???) This is a 100% complete, HEA series people! Read it!

But WAIT! There's more! Because at the end of the book, the author tells us that she will write a NEW series called 'Blood and Bone', which will continue the stories of several characters from these books that maybe didn't get their HEA's! Oh! That means we get to read more about.... NOPE... not gonna name the characters I'm hoping for. I don't want to jinx anything. I'm just excited that some of these other characters' stories will continue!

Not what I expected

A bit of a let down. I loved Asher but Shannon's constant need for independence was annoying at times. I get that she is a strong and "skilled" woman (she reminded us of it every other page) but she fought Asher on EVERYTHING! It was just a bit much. But the biggest let down was the fight scene. I guess I expected something more epic. I expected all 5 to join forces...hence the Prophecy of the 5. For the last 4 books we've been reading about the Prophecy of the 5, how there was a reason and purpose for each of them, yet other than being in the room, Ivie, Donna, and Rickie didn't do anything! What was the point to that? With their powers/skills so vamped up in their individual books, I was expecting them to ban together to take out the threat. Thrilling ending to a great series

What a great ending to a wonderful paranormal series. Shannon is one tough chick and she's not as surprised as the others about things that go bump in the night. Asher is the sexy vampire who is tasked with helping Shannon prepare for the battle with the Faction. One look at Asher and Shannon felt her soul settle. There's nothing like soul mates, vampires, hot sex, and battle for survival. CC Wood's Bitten series has taken the readers on a epic journey of self discovery, fate, love, sex, friendship, and ties that bind. I've loved every second of this journey and I'm sad it's over but what a awesome way for it to end. If you love vampires, shifters, and things that go bump in the night then read the Bitten series.

I had to purchase this for a college class. It is the only one of my textbooks I plan to resell immediately. The underlying message is carbs, carbs, carbs - even if they're refined, nutritionally devoid carbs. This book promotes MyPlate, artificial sweeteners, pasteurized skim milk and fruit juice, refined carbohydrates and sugar. If you believe those things are healthful, you may like this book.

The sample menus are extremely lacking in phytonutrients from vegetables and sulfur-rich foods to help the body detoxify. If you want/need to avoid gluten, dairy, soy or refined sugar, the sample menus in the book will be of no help. Thus, If you have any food allergies or sensitivities or you want a more holistic, functional approach to nutrition that doesn't promote diabetes and brain deterioration, I recommend finding another book.
