About the Author
"Barry Render" is the Charles Harwood Distinguished Professor of Management Science at the Roy E. Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. He received his M.S. in Operations Research and his Ph.D. in Quantitative Analysis at the University of Cincinnati. He previously taught at George Washington University, the University of New Orleans, Boston University, and George Mason University, where he held the GM Foundation Professorship in Decision Sciences and was Chair of the Decision Science Department. Dr. Render has also worked in the aerospace industry for General Electric, McDonnell Douglas, and NASA.

Professor Render has co-authored ten textbooks with Prentice-Hall, including "Managerial Decision Modeling with Spreadsheets, Operations Management, Principles of Operations Management, Service Management, Introduction to Management Science," and "Cases and Readings in Management Science." His more than one hundred articles on a variety of management topics have appeared in "Decision Sciences, Production and Operations Management, Interfaces, Information and Management," the "Journal of Management Information Systems, Socio-Economic Planning Sciences," and "Operations Management Review," among others.

Dr. Render has also been honored as an AACSB Fellow and named as a Senior Fulbright Scholar in 1982 and again in 1993. He was twice vice-president of the Decision Science Institute Southeast Region and served as Software Review Editor for Decision Line from 1989 to 1995. He has also served as Editor of the "New York Times" Operations Management special issues from 1996 to 2001. Finally, Professor Render has been actively involved inconsulting for government agencies and for many corporations, including NASA; the FBI; the U.S. Navy; Fairfax County, Virginia; and C8zP Telephone.

He teaches operations management courses in Rollins College's MBA and Executive MBA programs. In 1995 he was named as that school's Professor of the Year, and in 1996 was selected by Roosevelt University to receive the St. Claire Drake Award for Outstanding Scholarship.

"Ralph Stair" has been Professor of Management Science at Florida State University for twenty years and is now entering its phased retirement program. He received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University and an MBA from Tulane University. Under the guidance of Ken Ramsing and Alan Eliason, he received his Ph.D. in operations management from the University of Oregon.

He has taught at the University of Oregon, the University of Washington, the University of New Orleans, and Florida State University. He has twice taught in Florida State University's Study Abroad Program in London. Over the years, his teaching has been concentrated in the areas of information systems, operations research, and operations management.

Dr. Stair is a member of several academic organizations, including the Decision Sciences Institute and INFORMS, and he regularly participates at national meetings. He has published numerous articles and books, including "Managerial Decision Modeling with Spreadsheets, Introduction to Management Science, Cases and Readings in Management Science, Production and Operations Management: A Self-Correction Approach, Fundamentals of Information Systems, Principles of Information Systems, Introduction to Information Systems, Computers in Today'sWorld, Principles of Data Processing, Learning to Live with Computers, Programming in BASIC, Essentials of BASIC Programming, Essentials of FORTRAN Programming, and Essentials of COBOL Programming."

Dr. Stair divides his time between Florida and Colorado. He enjoys skiing, biking, kayaking, and other outdoor activities.

"Michael E. Hanna" is Professor of Decision Sciences at the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL).

Professional, interesting and comprehensive!

As someone who has taught Operations Management since Spring semester, 1980 following fifteen years in operations management in the steel industry, I've had the opportunity to review a large number of textbooks in this area. Without exageration, this is the most comprehensive, "user friendly" text that I have found. The illustrations, practice problems, power point slides and text book web site are great. Student comments have been very positive.
I strongly urge my colleagues who teach Operations Management to give this book a very serious look.

Amazing, most practical book at college education

I am using this book for my business class. This book will teach you in-depth principles and skills on how you can manage business operations with a lot of mathmatical skills.

I feel that this book is great because it is very well organized and easy for readers to read. It has graphs and visual aids all over and CD materials for students to go through problems.

By learning this book, readers can not only gain the knowledge on business operation, but they can also have actual skills in operation management.

A well-done text w/ plenty of support

I'll make two separate sets of comments - one for professors and one for students.
Students first... There is a well-done website that accompanies the book, which includes outlines, sample tests & quizzes, and related study materials. The text is about average in terms of readability in comparison to other texts on the subject, and there are plenty of real-world examples to illustrate OM concepts (OM texts, as a general rule, don't read well). You may be able to get by with a previous edition if the textbook contents are your priority, but be advised, however, that the seventh edition contains some new and revised material, a few chapters have been re-arranged, and there are some different end-of-chapter exercises and cases.
For professors... You are probably already aware that OM can be challenging for the professor as well as the student, esp. with respect to where to aim the course - to the managers and generalists, or to the technicians & quantitatively-oriented. Heizer and Render have enough material to support either approach. The text is accompanied with ample instructor resources, including a CD and a website with slideshows, notes, outlines, and various other pedagogical tools. The testbank is easy to use, but should be supplemented with some quantitative short problems (if a quantitative approach is important to you).
Heizer and Render have also done a fair job of keeping the material up-to-date, which has resulted, after seven editions, in a pretty decent product. For me, the instructor resources and the comprehensiveness of the content (adequate support for either a managerial or quantitative approach) make Heizer and Render a good choice by comparison to other OM texts.

People frequently ask us "how can I predict how 3D printing technologies will affect me?  My job? The things I care about or do for fun?"  While interviewing experts for Fabricated, we discovered that diverse users had some things in common, a set of core reasons why 3D printing enabled them to expand the limits of what they do.  We wrote up these recurring observations and called them the Ten Principles of 3D Printing.
The Ten Principles of 3D Printing give us a roadmap into the future and explain why 3D printing will disrupt manufacturing and product design. A disruptive technology shrinks key barriers of time, cost or skill.   Each Principle represents one core (and disruptive) characteristic of 3D printing that removes or reduces a core barrier of time, cost or skill (or all three).      
Ten Principles of 3D PrintingPrinciple one: Manufacturing complexity is free. On a 3D printer, it costs as much to make a simple cube as it does an elaborate and complex object of the same material.  This is disruptive since in traditional mass manufacturing, complex geometries (elaborate shapes) cost more to produce in terms of time and skill.  Free complexity will disrupt traditional pricing models and change how we calculate the cost of manufacturing things.
Principle two: Variety is free. Like a human artisan, a single 3D printer can fabricate many different shapes.  The intelligence lies in the computer, not in a machinist who must re-tool the way the machine is set up.  Free variety reduces the cost of customization and gives a single entrepreneur the ability to create many different types of 3D printed products on a single printer. 

Principle three: No assembly required. A 3D printer can print a hinge, a bicycle chain or even a nested set of Russian Dolls in a single "print job," no assembly required.  Traditional manufacturing machines make parts which must be assembled.  The more parts a product contains, the longer it takes to put together, the longer the supply chain and the more expensive it becomes to make. Reduced part count saves on assembly, reduces inventory and shortens supply chains.
Principle four: Zero lead time. A 3D printer can print on demand, when anobject is needed. Lead time, the time lapsed between a product's conception and its actual manufacture, is a core competitive differentiator.  3D printed, on-the-spot manufacturing will liberate companies from stockpiling physical inventory.  Product design will accelerate; custom, on-demand products made in direct response to customer demand will become financially feasible.  
Principle five: Unlimited design space. The 3D printing process, since it builds objects layer by layer, is capable of making physical shapes that were once impossible to make.  It's simple to 3D print hollow objects, interlocked objects, precise and complex internal structures.  With a 3D printer, we can create objects that once only nature could make, opening up vast new design possibilities.
Principle six: Zero skill manufacturing. Traditional manufacturing machines still demand that a skilled expert to adjust and calibrate them. A 3D printer gets most of its guidance from the design file. Once the design file is created, the printer can swing into action immediately. Unskilled manufacturing opens up new business models and could offer new modes of production for people in remote environments.
Principle seven: Compact, portable manufacturing. A 3D printer has a small footprint.  A 3D printer is also compact, as the size of the object being printed can be nearly as large as the printer. In contrast, an injection molding machine can onlymake objects significantly smaller than itself. Even better, a 3D printer, if the "print head" can swing freely, can fabricate objects even larger than itself such as structures or furniture. 
Principle eight: Less waste by-product. 3D printing is a precise process since objects are created in layers, not by carving away raw material or molding molten material into solid shapes. Machining metal is highly wasteful as an estimated 90 percent of the original metal gets ground off and ends up on the factory floor. Molding is a precise, low-waste manufacturing process but can only make simple shapes.
Principle nine: Infinite shades of materials. As 3D printers in the future gain the capacity to print with different types of raw materials in a single print job, we will witness the emergence of a new class of materials.  Multi-material 3D printers can blend and combine different raw materials in precise blends.  Digitally designed and precisely printed blends of materials will offer us a large and mostly unexplored palette of novel materials that have unusual properties or useful types of behaviors, for example wearable electronics or living tissue.
Principle ten: Precise physical replication. The 3D printing process relies on digital instructions.   The ability of the 3D printer to precisely carry out digital instructions will bring the design freedom and malleability of the digital world to the physical world.  Like digital music and media, physical objects will be scanned into digital form and then edited, copied or re-designed.

This is a good introduction to 3D printing. Not outstanding, but good. If I was the expert, and writing this book, I would make this book more like a text, with more technical information that explained the processes, the possible pitfalls, provides more details about the different materials, and the advantages and disadvantages of each type of printing material. Also, I would make the storytelling about Mr. Lipson's experiences and interviews succinct. He certainly got some good information from his interviews of other experts, but I really don't care where he got the information and where he had to travel to get it... Now, I'm going to look for a text book on this subject.

Imagine a book that could introduce you to the world of 3D printing and open your mind to the possibilities this technology could unleash. Imagine a book that educates and entertains. Now Imagine a book that that you can't put down yet you constantly stop to reread so as to fully grasp the implications of the authors' statements.

The preceding captures the essence of Fabricated. Fabricated is one of those rare books that unleashes your imagination while educating. The writing is like storytelling, yet educational and the illustrations are a work of art. I had a sense that I would enjoy Fabricated, but the extent, quality, and value of this book far exceeded my expectations.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone with an interest in 3D printing. Whether you are curious, understand a little, or are well versed in the subject matter, I believe that Fabricated has something for everybody.

Intriguing

Fabricated by Lipson and Kurman describes the popular topic of 3D printing, but rather than explore the nuts and bolts of the technology, it looks at the prospects of 3D printing as an industry, making it a great read not only for technology enthusiasts, but also for investors, economists, and industry leaders.
3D printing has captured a fair share of media attention lately and some of the popular applications are mind boggling. But are they real? Are we on the verge of a 3D printing revolution that will create a new multi billion dollar industry or is this just enthusiasm with a cool technology? The authors explore this question from multiple facets and by the end of chapter 7 the reader may be disillusioned. Without a killer app it just will not happen, and many popular 3D printing ideas are either too far-fetched to become a killer app in the near future (e.g. organ printing) or not sufficient to generate large enough demand (e.g. spare parts).
However, then comes chapter 8, food printing. It almost seems that the first seven chapters were written merely to make the reader desperate enough to consider the idea. At first glance you may ask who on earth will print food? But by the end of the chapter hopefully you will `get it' and join the authors in their prediction that food printing is the most likely killer app for 3D printing, the application that will turn a cool technology into a mainstream product.
If not yet convinced, chapter 9 - education - is icing on the cake. The example of printing a play dough space shuttle with elementary school 2nd grade kids is intriguing and begs the question of why wouldn't mummy (or daddy) use her 3D printer backing machine from chapter 8 to make custom SpongeBob cookies with little Danny?
The book continues on the route of education and art and then delves into legal challenges that lay ahead as 3D printing becomes more common. Not just the media magnets like printing guns, but also the more common challenges of how our legal system may fall short in terms of IP protection and liability.
The final two chapters attempt to predict beyond the near future, demonstrating that our tendency to view innovation in incremental steps causes us to underestimate the full potential of 3D printing.
Overall, excellent read; once you're hooked it's hard to put down.

In this re-issue of a book first published more than two decades ago, Rolheiser, a Catholic priest and author, looks at the deep longing every person experiences and often names as loneliness. He examines its nature and inherent dangers at some length, but also shows how loneliness can bring great benefits, as it often does in the lives of artists. Loneliness, he writes, presents both potential peril and tremendous opportunity for growth, giving birth to the latter when "understood and channeled creatively." Rolheiser develops his ideas by showing how the Hebrew and Christian scriptures and various theologians from Augustine to Karl Rahner have dealt with this basic human problem. He also draws on writers as diverse as the mystic John of the Cross, philosopher Søren Kierkegaard and novelist John Updike. Kierkegaard, he says, was able to mine beauty from his loneliness by seeing it as a "vocation" and himself as someone who could form his pain into "beautiful music—music that could bring healing to those who hear it." Rolheiser goes on to propose a "spirituality of loneliness" rooted in prayer and "the community of life." Readers who have delved into spiritual classics and the works of contemporary religious writers for answers to this basic human question will be attracted to this book, which eschews spiritual fluff. Rolheiser is not given to romantic illusions or easy answers, but serves as an informed guide who is familiar with the challenging territory about which he writes.

Wealth of insight for those driven to understand loneliness

In 2004, the year this book was reissued, I was engulfed by loneliness after a deep betrayal by a friend and by my spiritual community. In the time since, I have been driven to not only understand that personal trial, but also to contemplate human loneliness--its causes and its purposes in our lives. This book is the most helpful I have come across regarding this subject.

Rolheiser offers a well-thought out and deep examination of loneliness, beginning with its dangers-- chief among them, its being a roadblock to human intimacy. He then describes the various types of loneliness--alienation,restlessness,fantasy,rootlessness,and psychological depression.

Writing from a Christian perspective, he goes over Old and New Testament reasons for loneliness,including sin, and being a pilgrim on earth. He then writes about 4 great Christian theologians' thoughts on the subject--Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, John of the Cross, and Karl Rahner. I personally loved this section-- to know that others over the past 2 millenia have wrestled with the same issues I do today was immensely comforting to me, and I was encouraged by their perspectives.

He concludes with a discussion of the hidden benefits of loneliness and ways to minimize it in our lives.

A key insight for me is that loneliness will never be fully overcome in this life--we are created for complete union with God, and since that is impossible here on earth, we will inevitably experience loneliness at times.

The only fault I can find with the book is that it does not go into the psychological reasons for loneliness,such as childhood trauma or difficulties with attachment to others. Rolheiser is a theologian, not a therapist, so perhaps he felt that area was beyond the scope of his expertise. Still, I think including a brief summation of that topic would have been helpful.

Engaging,well-organized,compassionate--this book is as timely today as when it was first published.

Loneliness - Our Driving Force to Heaven

We've all heard that there are two sides of everything. In this book, Fr. Rolheiser shows the reader that loneliness can be crippling but channeled correctly can be a creative force in one's life. I like the way he starts with defining what loneliness is, then moves on to the different causes of loneliness and the kinds of loneliness. He doesn't present a treatise on how to cure loneliness but more of a gentle leading that makes the reader understand that as human beings separated momentarily from our Creator, we will always have a touch of loneliness to be back in our forever home.

This book also offers insight on how loneliness affects even our most basic relationships like loneliness can cause overpossesiveness that drives people away instead of closer or being too eager to please can make people uncomfortable.

In the end, Fr. Rolheiser concludes that we are destined to feel some loneliness because of our separation from God but that same loneliness is the driving force that makes us reach out for Him and others.

Hard to put into words the insights of this book. I have had answers to questions I have had for years about loneliness and isolation that as a christian is part of the walk. All I can say is read the book. No formulas here(ie pray more, read bible more, etc) but really helpful insights.

Cannot reccomend this book enough.

About the Author

Professor Christian Raulin has been Medical Director of the Karlsruhe Laser Clinic in Germany since 1998, having worked as a specialist in laser medicine for the preceding decade. His experience over many years in the application of different types of laser is reflected in his numerous contributions to the medical literature and at congresses. As a consequence, he is recognized as a leading authority on laser treatment in dermatology and cosmetic/aesthetic medicine.

Dr. Syrus Karsai is a dermatologist in training at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University Clinic in Greifswald, Germany. Since 2006 the principal focus of his work has been aesthetic laser surgery, and during this time he has been the author of well over 40 international and national publications on this topic. He is recognized worldwide as a renowned expert in dermatological laser medicine and is also actively involved in the development of innovative laser devices. Dr. Karsai has been the recipient of various awards, including from the German Dermatological Laser Society (DDL) and the German Dermatological Society (DDG).

Hmmmm

My wife and I have been working with Lasers and IPL technologies for the last ten years. And in that time we have read a few books on the subject.

For me this book didn't quite hit the spot.

It has plenty of information but it wasn't always easy to follow and sometimes I had to read certain sections two or three times before the information gelled. It also lacked on case study detail - yes it had case studies, but for me it did not contain the detailed information I was expecting nor was it laid out in an easy to compare format.

Don't get me wrong - this book is informative. It just takes some time to find the information you are after and quite often requires a re-read (or two) to understand. Hence the 3 out of 5 stars.
