The author works for an automotive company, where she got introduced to the game of road rallies. She has participated in many road rallies, and have organized even more, specializing in rallies with a Halloween theme. She decided to write a book on road rallies when people continuous came to her for advice on how to organize a road rally. The original "helpful hints" grew to be considerable, so she decided to publish the book to help other people who would like to hold and/or participate in road rallies. With her first-hand knowlege of the game as well as time-saving tips, she hopes that everyone who participates in and/or organizes a road rally enjoys the game as much as she does.

Book focuses on an obscure form of Road Rally

The book is reasonably OK but it should be pointed out that the focus of the book is not on Road Rally in general but on Gimmick rallies and more specifically puzzle style gimmick rallies and even more specifically puzzles like word scrambles that may not involve looking out of the vehicle. The large majority of Road Rallies in the US are not of this type and the book does not venture to explain that there are in fact many types of Road Rallies and that it is narrowly focused on a pretty obscure type. With so few books on Road Rallying this one does a disservice to the rally community by selling itself as "Road Rally" without qualification. I admit I bought for the book title alone and I was very disappointed.

Step-by-step Clue Hunts

This book is not about a traditional road rally, but more a clue hunt how-to book. Clue hunts are generally run at night (for about 3-4 hours) and end at a restaurant or hall. Diane takes you step by step through the process, including clues, tips and forms. For anyone putting on a clue hunt, this is a great reference book!

This is one book that you MUST HAVE, especially if you are planning a road rally of your own. It will guide you, chapter by chapter with easy to follow examples(and forms), through the planning and implementing stages of making your road rally "one to be remembered!". Diane's many years of experience in planning and organizing road rallies will make you an expert, too!

Senior editor at Lucasfilm Ltd., J. W. RINZLER has overseen dozens of Star Wars books, including Mythmaking: Behind the Scenes of Attack of the Clones, The Visual Dictionary: Attack of the Clones, and The Cinema of George Lucas. Rinzler attended Parsons School of Design and New York University’s Graduate School of Arts and Science. He settled for a while in Paris, where he taught art history and cinema for many years at private and public universities. As the associate producer for a video-game developer, he wrote the scripts for a number of educational titles. Rinzler returned to the States to become managing editor of GamePro magazine and published a number of articles on the industry. He is the author of The Making of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Rinzler lives in Petaluma, California.

Great! But be warned, the script is NOT in the US version!

Fantastic, beautiful book. Full of gorgeous artwork and pictures. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because for some inexplicable reason, the script is NOT included in the US version. However, the complete illustrated script IS included in the UK version, which I bought from Amazon.co.uk. I can't imagine why this was done, it is a real disservice to the US market. I highly recommend getting the UK version even though it will cost a bit more than the US version.

The Force Is Strong In This Book

[[VIDEOID:25183791]]Putting this book down is difficult after you flip through a few pages. There are hundreds of pieces of conceptual art and beautiful paintings. It is apparent right from the start that George Lucas only hire the best artists for his movie.

The art genre is science fiction. You'll see a lot of concept art on cityscape, robots, planets, costumes, creatures, architecture, props and characters relating to the Star Wars movie. This book is all about art, you won't see any movie stills.

There are two versions of the book. The one with the movie script has 272 pages. The one I'm holding has only 224 pages.

Design concepts are explained for the characters and set. There's not much text but enough. The level of detail, effort and creativity displayed by the artists is simply marveling. This genre is really a playground for artists to explore with their imagination.

For Star Wars fans, there's no reason not to get this book. For artbook lovers, especially those who like sci-fi, this book should be on your shopping list also.

The Pick of the Star Wars Books

I own the "Art of" ... Episode I and Episode II, so the "Art of Episode III" was a must purchase for me. These three books are very classy, being the pick of the Star Wars books for those who have an interest in how the movies develop through sketches and storyboards, hence the 'art' of Star Wars. While the art-books for the first two movies focused heavily on characters, the Art of Episode III focuses particularly on the worlds created for the movie, presumably as most characters have already been seen.

I'm not interested in art, so I don't have a bias toward this type of product. I'm a Star Wars fan first and foremost. The art work is, however, of a high quality and shows diagrams, paintings, drawings and sketches of the characters, planet locations, vehicles and weapons - everything that was designed by Lucas' own art team for the movie. The book (this time) is arranged in chronological order, taking place over a period of two years where the author documented the development of the movie from preproduction to principal photography to digital shot creation. The author, Rinzler, was allowed to work with the artists and therefore had first-hand experience with Lucas and the team. Typically, the art team generate their own designs which are bounced off Lucas and then manipulated to his satisfaction. This is all documented with discussions with the artists themselves and Lucas as to why something is kept and another discarded.

Not only do you find the items that made the final cut of the movies but concepts that didn't make the big screen. I don't want to give anything away about Episode III, so an example from the 'Art of Episode II' is the exciting concept of the Sith villain. Count Dooku was the eventual villain chosen by Lucas (reportedly due to Dooku's regal manner) but the character found in some alternative Star Wars literature called Asajj Ventress (the female dark jedi with the black and white martial arts appearance who carries two curved lightsabres) has a series of sketches and paintings attributed to her. So we see Lucas doesn't omit any ideas from his designers, and uses them in various side projects. It is fascinating seeing these characters etc pop-up in various side projects.

Overall, all Star Wars fans should have the "Art of ..." books. They provide a classy addition to the bookshelf and provide hours of intriguing reading and dreaming of a galaxy far, far away.

To my surprise a first rate Spider-Man/Venom storyline

I do not know why Marvel decided to stop producing "Peter Parker: Spider-Man" and replace it with "The Spectacular Spider-Man." After all, it is not like there is less about Spider-Man's secret identity in this or any other one of the web-heads comic book titles. Anyhow, in my Popular Culture class we have a comic book unit where students read "The Essential Spider-Man, Volume 1," which has "Amazing Fantasy" #15 and the first twenty issues and annual of "The Amazing Spider-Man." They put together a model of the defining elements that appear in most Spider-Man comic books and then pick up a current copy of "The Amazing Spider-Man," "The Spectacular Spider-Man" or "Ultimate Spider-Man" to see how that issue stacks up against their model. Usually their are some significant differences between now Peter Parker is married and has a real job as opposed to being a teenage science nerd. But their biggest complaint is that most of the issues they pick up today are always only one part of a continuing story. That makes it rather hard to pick up a single issue and get hooked, which is why Marvel has rectified that particular problem by having trade paperback collections of specific story lines.

"The Spectacular Spider-Man, Volume 1: The Hunger" has the first five issues of the comic and a confrontation between Spider-Man and Venom put together by Paul Jenkins (writer), Humberto Ramos (penciler) and Wayne Faucher (Inker). A series of assaults in New York City have left behind victims who are seemingly unconnected in a strange coma: each victim has been drained of their adrenaline and the only clue is a set of small puncture wounds just above the kidneys. While the cops are investigating Peter is feeling guilty over Flash Thompson's condition (the Green Goblin put Flash in a runaway truck and he ended up with severe brain damage). While on patrol Spider-Man runs into the twisted form of the half-human, half-alien symbiote known as Venom. Of course, Venom is responsible to for those attacks. However, the twist in this particular story is that Venom is no longer linked to Eddie Brock and the suit is looking for a new host.

Venom was never one of my favorite Spider-Man villains, especially the more he kept coming back. But "The Hunger" ends up being the best Venom story I can recall reading because it offers an interesting reinterpretation of the relationship between the suit and Eddie, which involves Spider-Man as well. This is not as earthshaking as finding out the Swamp Thing is really an elemental force of nature rather than a guy caught in between an explosion and a serum, but it does turn Eddie Brock into a tragic character as we find out why he hates Spider-Man and what the symbiote really wants as well. More importantly, in the end it puts Spider-Man in the position of having to make another one of those damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't decisions that is a core part of the Spider-Man mythos that is aptly captured by Spider-Man's final thought in the story.

Ramos is a most distinctive artist whether drawing his elongated Spider-Man or Peter and his friends, and while it might strike some readers as too cartoonish, but it does work and the atmospheric coloring provided by Studio F gives it additional depth. We also have a nice guest appearance by the Fantastic Four in this storyline and seeing Ramos drawn that particular quartet is a nice little visual treat as well. But it is the story of "The Hunger" that is the strength.. There is no reason to expect that this will lead to better Venom stories down the road, but since I was actually interested in how this one played out for once, that is a pretty good recommendation right there.

Venom's Back

Finally a good Venom story. Here's some pros and cons...

PROS:

1. Eddie Brock is now more sympathetic; we see why he REALLY hates Spider-Man now, and it makes more sense.

2. If you knew nothing about Venom before this story, you wouldn't be lost. Everything is fleshed out well and I can almost say that this is Venom's "Killing Joke" story - definitive.

CONS:

1. Ya know.. the art is cool and all, but does Venom HAVE to be so huge? Ramos once drew a picture of Spidey and Venom fighting for a WIZARD magazine special and Venom looked right. Here... I dunno.

2. *SPOILER* The whole "A child grows within me" thing seemed pointless to me. It came out of nowhere. I guess that adds to the whole reason for its need for survival, but c'mon, Venom has had like 6 kids by this point. We have yet to see this new offspring and hopefully we won't anytime soon.

Ishioka, well known in her native Japan, will achieve more international fame with the publication of her second book (the first being Eiko by Eiko , 1983). She dissects the beginnings and realizations of her art in nine forms, ranging from a four-night-only performance of a Japanese opera to her millennial movie, The Cell . Hallmarks soon become apparent: literal visual metaphors (the anatomical diagram of an arm for David Copperfield's Broadway magic show); minimalism, as in Hwang's M. Every page I turned made me gasp in awe. Phew!

Let me say at once: this is the most incredible, most beautiful book I own. And I've collected quality illustrated books for years. It stands between Avedon's "Observations" and Damien Hirst's "I want to be with everybody blah blah..." on my (reinforced) bookshelf--and right now it tops either of them in its artistry, design, and sheer beauty.
I'm getting carried away. So... this is a breathtaking journey through 10 of the projects that this artist/ costume designer/ set designer has undertaken in the last fifteen years--in sketches, photographs, and her own narrative--from creating the look of Paul Schrader's Mishima, to dressing Jennifer Lopez in The Cell. Between times, she has lent her incredible vision to theatre, film, opera, and installation art.
I think she's been so successful because she's never compromised her vision. It inspires me (as an artist) to not give in. Eiko Ishioka won an Oscar for her costumes for Dracula. No doubt she'll be nominated again for her work on The Cell. According to the flap text, she has also won a Grammy, and a Cannes Film Festival Award. I expect to see her win an award also for this book--It's as good as any of her big-name, big-budget projects. Good for her!

Kind of mind-blowing

I cannot recommend this book highly enough for artists, costumers, filmmakers, theatre designers and directors and set designers as a valuable asset to your research library. Eiko is one of the most visionary designers of our time and this book is replete with extraordinary photos of her extraordinary work, as well as interesting information and interviews about how she achieves it. I use this book all the time when I teach design because the photos are marvelously detailed and complete. When you have close-ups that are close enough to count threads in a garment, it's worth using that photo. Her work is inspiring and I have shown many directors, who were unfamiliar with anything she'd done other than the costumes for 'Dracula', a different way to approach their visual techniques by showing them this book. A real find!
