Well written, extremely usable

My company wanted to give QuickBase a go for a quick solution to a workflow management issue. I bought this book, read it, and was then able to create a fully operational database with all the bells and whistles in about two weeks. It was a great reference tool during the process and was able to answer any questions that came up.

If you are using QuickBase for the first time, I highly recommend flipping through this book first. It really let me know what my possibilities were.

Not Ready For Prime Time

The number one problem with this book is that it was self-published and did not undergo a formal editorial process. English is not the author's first language and, while I am sensitive to that, if you are going to write a technical book in English, it should be proofread and edited for the proper use of English. The reader will encounter an unusually large amount spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors per page that will make reading this book difficult and slow-going. Additionally, the code samples were not reviewed either and the reader will again encounter numerous typos, redundant code, and unused code.

Second on my list is that it seems that the book does not know who its audience is and so, it has material in it that some readers will find irrelevant, while other readers will find that the book is lacking. Being that this is a book about developing widgets for the web, it would be reasonable to assume that the reader already has strong knowledge of (X)HTML and CSS, and has already been writing JavaScript to enhance their web pages. Yet much of the book talks about elements of the web that are so fundamental that anyone with this skill set would find mind numbing. The book makes the assumption that your widget will be hosted by a public 3rd party host and that you are writing the widget for personal gain. As such, a GREAT DEAL of the book is devoted to discussing building widgets to be hosted by or used within: Google, Facebook, Microsoft Live, Twitter, etc. There's even an appendix dealing with how to promote and make money from your widget, which hardly seems relevant to a book on developing a widget. One small paragraph explains that widgets in the Enterprise will surely be in the future and that's it. There is no more discussion of Enterprise development.

Because the author doesn't take into account who the audience for this book is, there is a great deal of superfluous information in the book and the book is very disorganized. It takes 108 pages before the first example of how to create a widget appears, with the first 107 pages being largely irrelevant to the development process. Some of it could and should have been placed in later chapters and still much of it could have been removed completely. Chapter 6, in particular ("Developing a Rating Widget with JSON and AJAX") really feels like it should be in the appendix as a case study, rather than "here's how the pro's do it", which is what you think you're going to get, but then don't. As one other reviewer pointed out, this book has no index, which is very strange for any technical book. But, this book doesn't really have enough actual technical content to warrant an index. So, the problem isn't that there's no index, the problem is that there isn't enough "meat" to warrant one.

Page 3 of the book talks about the book's support websites. One site is presented as a live look at one of the widgets covered in the book and is described as being a "popular web widget service". The site is unavailable when I try to access it. The other site is the book's support page, which, rather than being broken up into logical sub-pages (errata, source code, sample chapters), is posted all in one very long page, that appears to use AJAX to call for more content as you get close to the bottom of the page. This causes a "never ending" page feeling and worse, clicking anywhere on the page produces an "Out of memory" error. Additionally, the sample code presented on that page has non-ASCII character symbols appearing within it in several spots.

Although there is some good information here and there, I cannot recommend this edition of this book. Hopefully, the book will be revamped, the content will be professionally edited and the material will be honed to be more relevant to the needs of the reader.

more proof reading please this deserves more care

this is a very useful book for beginners using json and other standards based languages to build widgets for the web. the book itself is easy to read and absorb, but the kindle version which i'm reading has tons of mistakes. Within the 1st chapter it wrongly explans the dom as the domain object model. Code is in the wrong case which if entered as is would genorate syntax errors such as using an uppercase 'V' to declare a variable in flash's actionscript language. i think this error is proably due to the way the book has been converted but still more effort should have gone into a product. In summary good solid content easy to understand and implement in your own projects, just unfortunate it needs more proof reading to be really great.

Great book worth buying, but still needs a revision to clean up the spelling and grammar errors

Pros:

I really like the book and I got a lot out of it. I found the book so good that despite the drawbacks listed below I rate the book 4 stars. This should really be a 5 star book. Unlike other reviewers I didn't find the beginning to be "full of buzzwords". I found it to be a nice, slow and steady introduction to the development of widgets. I thought the Security chapter was especially useful and I liked the appendix "Understanding the Business Model of Web Widget" and the chapter on developing widgets for Facebook. I found them to be quite thought-provoking. They provide a good overview and discussion on the topics.

After reading this book I feel like I wouldn't have any trouble developing widgets of any sort; and that's what it's all about; just what I was looking for.

While reading this book I was in contact with the author several times and I find that to be a nice benefit. He was helpful and responsive.

Cons:

Apparently the first edition of this book was riddled with typos and grammar errors. I'm reviewing the "fully revised and updated" 2nd edition of this book. Despite being fully revised and updated, I find the second edition also has plenty of typos and grammar errors. Unfortunately there are plenty of places where the errors make the book hard to understand. It took me 10 seconds to find an example of what I'm talking about. Here's the exact line:
This secures our server side for display data; let's see the update data part
Not only do I expect something like a colon at the end of that sentence, I expect to see the update data part. Instead I see a new section titled "Rating Value".

I went to the support site for the book and was unable to find the source code to download despite a diligent look. I also found a main link that returned a 404 error.

A lot of the diagrams didn't make sense to me. I ended up mostly ignoring them unless it seemed very important to grock them.

Summary: Despite the drawbacks of the editing, this book was worth it to me.

Gr. 2-5. The third title in the Judy Moody series finds the spunky third-grader in a save-the-world mood. Judy would like to enter an adhesive bandage design contest, but she doesn't have any ideas. Then a class environmental preservation project inspires her creativity, as well as a new mission. But it's not long before Judy discovers that saving the world isn't easy, whether she is trying to convince her father not to drink rainforest bean coffee or her mom to dispose of a rubber toilet plunger. However, Judy persists, and while bandage-art fame eludes her, she does come up with a class recycling project that makes a difference. It also puts her in a very good mood. This charming read features characteristically snappy, humorous prose; expressive, witty, black-and-white illustrations; and some great ideas for classroom or home projects. Judy Moody Gets Famous

I recently bought the Judy Moody books for my 8 year old son. I read them too and found them to be enjoyable.
In this one Judy just wants to be famous SO bad especially after her younger brother Stink, gets to go to the White House and one of her classroom rivals wins a spelling bee. She, along with her closest friends, try hard to become "famous". Her first attempt of trying to make people believe that she actually has a cherry pit that belonged to George Washington end hilariously. Later she sees a chance to win a contest at the local pet store but at the last minute that one goes awry.
Judy does finally achieve "stardom" and it is very heartwarming.
You will enjoy these books as well as your children. My 8 year old son just loves them and can't wait for the next one. If your child enjoys the Junie B books, they will probably like these as well.

An Educator's View

This series is a good reading level for third or fourth graders to take on independently. Younger children will enjoy having these stories read to them.
I like many things about this book. The story line is funny and engaging. There are many examples of onomatopoeia. Additionally, the book introduces interesting and educational facts. Judy is a character that many young girls will be able to relate to. Children with younger siblings will easily relate to and enjoy the interactions between Judy and her little brother, Stink.

Here is what I do not like: Judy does an awful lot of lying in this book and never faces any consequences. I believe this sends a terrible message to our children.

No other word but funny...

The sequel to Judy Moody can get no other word than being funny! After she fails to win the spelling bee contest and sees her arch rival Jessica win and get that beautiful tiara Judy Moody made it her job to become famous!! However like all other Judy Moody books things get out of hand and the book turns outragously funny. Judy's cat named "Mouse" helps achieve some fame but that isn't lasting. A hilirious book for all ages to enjoy and laugh about!!

Good, but here's another idea...

This is a very nice book and the one we used in my Old Norse class at BYU, and the selections are all very good, very interesting. However, I agree with the reviewer that this is, despite the title, hardly the best introdruction to the language.
What I recommend is this: Get yourself Stefán Einarsson's fine book, "Icelandic: Grammar, Texts, Glossary", which is set up in lessons for the beginner and which you can get real cheap here at Amazon. That book is modern Icelandic, so the readings aren't about Egill Skallagrímsson or Snorri's Edda, but not only is the Old Norse spirit very much alive in modern Iceland (and all the people very familiar with the old stories), but the language has changed extraordinarily little in the last thousand years (very very minor things), so that if you learn modern Icelandic even reasonably well (which you will from Einarsson), you can easily pick up the sagas with no problem.
Then, when you've finished with his book, you can get Gordon, which will be much more enjoyable then. Alternatively, you can get the texts of lots of the sagas online from Icelandic sites and get hardcopy English versions here at Amazon to use as "ponies". (Hrafnkels saga is a good one to start with, or Snorra Edda.) Good luck!

But not for beginners

Please don't send away 30 dollars thinking that this book is going to teach you to read Old Norse / Old Icelandic. If you're hoping for a basic grammar, with graded lessons, you're going to be disappointed. This is an excellent work, an indispensable work, but it's a reader for those who have already learned the basics of Old Icelandic.
After a brief introduction to Scandinavian history, the Viking expansion, and saga literature, the author gives about 160 pages of West Norse, normalized into classical Icelandic. Most of the selections are from the sagas, and they are well annotated, and a full vocabulary is included in the back of the book. There is also a section on what he calls "East Norse" (the Old Norse particular to Denmark, Norway and Sweden), and a small section dealing with the language of the runic inscriptions.
There is a 40 or 50 page section where he presents the grammar, but it's more along the lines of an outline of the grammar. It's sufficient for someone who already has a good knowledge of Old English, OHG, or Gothic, but my hat's off to anyone with the determination to acquire a reading knowledge of the language from this grammatical sketch alone.
There's the rub: where DO you get the introduction to Old Icelandic that will enable you to use this book with benefit? The superb learning grammar "Old Icelandic: an Introductory Course" by Valfells and Cathey is out of print. Kenneth Chapman wrote "Graded Readings and Exercises in Old Icelandic" about 35 years ago, but that's disappeared as well. Until either of those works is reprinted, or a new introduction is written, it's going to be tough.
But none of this is meant to take anything away from Gordon's work; it's a wonderful, scholarly work. Problem is, you really do need to have something of a background before you use it.

A venerable classic--learn the language by your bootstraps

It seems like this book has been around forever. It was first published in 1927 and for many years was the only English language resource for learning Old Icelandic. But that didn't mean that Gordon made the process easy. There are no basic lessons of the "Helgi is a Viking. See Helgi loot" type that you normally expect to find in an introductory language text. On the contrary, Gordon provides the grammar and vocabulary all right--at the end of the book--but it's up to the user to apply them to the wide selection of classic Norse literature that he's included. It's not an impossible way to learn the language, but it can be confusing at first. Those who have a background in Old English will find it easier going because of the similarities between the two languages.
Gordon was the text my class used many years ago when I took Old Norse in grad school. I still remember my professor pointing out all its inaccuracies and criticizing the author. Nonetheless, between Gordon, Zoega's dictionary (now available online), and a xerox of "Gunnlaug's Saga," we muddled through. Learning a language by parsing each word is tedious, but it does give one a sense of accomplishment.
In addition to the grammar and literary selections, Gordon contains a lengthy historical introduction to Old Norse literature. It's out-of-date by now, but still a good place to start. As for the selections themselves, they provide a fairly broad overview. "Hrafnkel's Saga," a gem of a character study, is given in its entirety. There are selections from Snorri and from the Vinland sagas, among other pieces. The only complaint that I have is that Gordon is a little light on the poetry. The humorous "Thrymskvida" (sorry about the spelling) and "The Waking of Angantyr," an eerie little piece not included in the standard eddic canon, are the major poems.
Whether or not you use Gordon as your primary grammar, its selection of litearture makes it a worthy companion for the student of Old Icelandic. My copy is now battered and missing its spine, but it still has a place on my bookshelf.

Is this guy considered "Alpha" or just plain rude?

I thought the book description of billionaire Gaelan's coldness towards his six year old daughter and his inability to feel love for her must have been exaggerated. But then I read the book, and it is quite accurate. Not only that, but he keeps her virtually imprisoned in their house, home schooled and not allowed to have friends visit. The description did not mention his rudeness and arrogance, which he possesses in abundance.

He hires Chloe sight unseen to be his daughter's in-home tutor. Upon meeting her, he immediately fires her and declares, "I don't have to explain myself to you. I've met you, and I don't want you here. End of story." So what was Chloe's transgression? She's too young and too pretty; he had thought he was hiring a grandmotherly type. Shortly after, he hires her back, then practically attacks her with a kiss, and then SHE threatens to quit. She doesn't, of course, and the reason provided is that she feels such a strong bond with the child she had met mere hours before.

They spat and spar as they gradually learn to trust each other, and Chloe learns the reason for Gaelan's attitude towards his daughter. It is quite dramatic, as expected, but it's an absurd excuse for mistreatment of a young child. We know how the book will end, because we've seen it all: walls will come down, misunderstandings will be understood, obstacles will be obliterated, etc.

About 1/3 of the way through the book, Gaelan begins his transition to Completely Different Person and decides that he's in love with Chloe and that it might be a good idea to stop forcing his daughter to address him by his first name.

Soon after, Sophia and Chloe are in a car crash. Chloe is fine, but little Sophia is hospitalized with a concussion. When Gaelan learns of the crash, he seems more concerned over Chloe's welfare than his daughter's. I guess this is supposed to be romantic. Rather grossly, Gaelan's and Chloe's first romantic encounter occurs in the honeymoon suite of a hotel (yup, the only one available) while Sophia lies in the hospital. They express their deep concern over Sophia through sex and also consider partaking in the room's available champagne and hot tub. Never addressed is the fact they left Sophia in the hospital overnight alone! Also not addressed is the fact that Chloe was responsible for the accident by accepting a ride in a stranger's car and not properly restraining Sophia. I'm not even a parent, and that bothered me!

The book features a few Big Misunderstandings, quick forgiveness, a couple of Big Twists (that actually surprised me), and two minor villains. The author attempted to wrap everything up with a bow in a manner that would test even the most tolerant reader's credulity.

My review probably sounds like it should be no more than 2 stars. I'm trying to be fair with the 3, because the author's writing itself is not bad, and some people might actually enjoy this book. I happened to dislike the lead characters, and that feeling was intensified because I felt that the author glossed over or ignored some pretty horrible behavior and expected us to like the characters as soon as she waved her magic wand.

I just wish there were more books about men who are kind, self-confident, compassionate, and yes, SEXY, with amazing techniques in bed. Is a man like this really less appealing to readers than a man like Gaelan? Obviously, there's a big appeal for the Gaelan types, based on the amount of books I see.

I love to read stories like this so i decided to take a chance. I was severly disappointed. I felt the plot was really jumpy and that the story did not have a nice flow. I had to go back a re-read parts because i was confused as to things that had happened. I do not recommend this book to anyone. It was awful.

Cliched but the author shows promise

The Billionaire's Secrets has a wonderful premise with great mood and setting. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was set in Newfoundland, a rare place to set a romantic suspense. I also felt that the writing was clean and the very few mistakes I found weren't bothersome, with the exception that I always thought that the rum, Screech, was a brand name, yet it was never capitalized. But what really bothered me was although the novel had been revised in 2012, the same issues remained in the new copy. The hero gets mad at heroine, then kisses her, then she gets mad and forgives him. Then the cycle starts again in a different scene. The hero appeared to have a bipolar disorder.
The plot was cliched and unbelievable. In the opening scene, the heroine is nearly run over by the hero who then drives off after telling her that if she can walk to his home, with all her luggage, she has the job. The hero is difficult to like and the heroine, though strong, is too forgiving, mostly because the hero is handsome and the child she is to educate is too cute. I also felt that the scene in the hotel was staged as if the author was trying to install the requisite love scene. It was hard to believe that in the city there was only one hotel room available and it was the honeymoon suite, and that the hospital would not allow a parent to stay with an injured child. The characters did not endear themselves by wanting to make love and open a bottle of champagne to celebrate that the child was not injured too badly.
When the lovemaking is finally consummated several scenes later, a spare bedroom magically appears beside his home office and the pair can make love there. The plot twists at the end of the book were more than predictable and the unlikeable hero switched too suddenly. The author has talent, but should employ a brutal editor to point out plot problems in her future stories. She tried too hard to recreate a Jane Eyre styled book at the expense of believability. Jane Eyre is a book that reflected the times in which it was set. It does not translate well in today's world.
But there is enough quality writing in this book to warrant saying that if the author publishes another book, I might try her again.
