Somewhat interesting

This is really two separate books in one. I enjoyed the first one "Dreamgirl My Life as a Supreme". Mary Wilson wrote what I believe is a very objective chronicle of the rise of the Supremes. Some reviewers regard her book as just an attack on Diana Ross. However, she said many good and positive things about Diana. I certainly believe she told the truth and I certainly see The Supremes in a completely different light. I always enjoyed their songs and I can now appreciate their hard work ethic and talent even more. From this account, I believe that basically Diana Ross sold her soul for fame and fortune. The way she treated Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson was inexcusable and just downright mean. This book is probably a good read just for Supremes fans. The second book "Supreme Faith" was not quite as much a page turner. I really glanced at alot of the content. There was some repetition from the first book, but not alot. It would be interesting to know what Cindy Birdsong is doing now and how the Supremes affected her life.

INSPIRING AND COMPELLING!

To the objective reader, Mary Wilson comes across as a warm and open person...exactly as she is in real life. (I have met her and spoken with her on occasion over the years). Indeed, this is a very personal work, from a very personal point of view.

The main players in the story, Diana Ross, Berry Gordy, and of course, Wilson herself, [not to forget the "ousted" Florence Ballard, upon whom the Effie character in "Dreamgirls" of Broadway and Academy Award fame is largely based] are accurately portrayed... and legions of other accounts confirm this.

Wilson never comes across as intentionally negative. Why should she? She is widely regarded as an extremely positive person. Indeed, she has defended the Supremes, and yes, Diana Ross, throughout her public life. She has supported and promoted the Supremes unique legacy every day. [In a conversation I had with Ms. Wilson in Atlantic City several years ago, where I was telling her how much more seasoned I thought she and Flo Ballard sounded on the MEET THE SUPREMES album, she defended Diana Ross by saying, "Oh, we were all good, and just starting out...We all were so proud of those songs." What class, I thought to myself. Ms. Wilson then graciously signed my copy of DREAMGIRL.]

Now, this is not to say that there are not juicy and spicy parts to this story...no, there are plenty of those! This was long the best-selling rock autobiography of all time! Anyone would be hard-pressed to match the drama, the excitement, as well as the heartache found in this story. A most interesting aspect of this work is the author's candor, especially about love affairs with Steve McQueen and especially Tom Jones.

However, what makes this story most remarkable is the development and growth of Wilson herself...particularly in recent years, when Wilson has become a celebrated author, motivational lecturer, humanitarian, musicians' rights advocate, actress, producer, mother, grandmother and college student.

A supreme testament to persistence, genuine-ness, and enthusiasm for life. An INSPIRATION!

Read this for a Glimpse of the Real Rock-n-Roll

It's too bad this excellent little book is so hard to find! It really gives you a true picture of what it was like to be a rock-n-roll star in the early 70's when rock was at its peak. Mott the Hoople were just "in the pocket." They were big enough stars to draw large crowds and be well recognized and respected, but they were never exactly superstars. They were the "blue collar" of rock-n-rollers and this book shows that very well. It also shows, in an unvarnished way, how a Briton viewed America back then, including some very poignant comments on the state of our race relations in this country. Ian Hunter isn't preachy, he just tells it the way he sees it. He is also a very literate writer. Having been in his mid-to-late 30's when he was touring, he was older than many other musicians at the time. Old enough, in fact, to have had a previous career as a print journalist which made his observations and translation to writing very good, indeed!

Simply the Best Rock Book Ever!

Ian Hunter proves himself to be one of the most articulate and intelligent personalities in rock in this diary of Mott's late '72 US tour in support of their All The Young Dudes album. It is a humble, egoless tale of the steps and stumbles of a band trying to break into the American market, lovingly and honestly told through the eyes of a young aspiring band leader. Refreshingly free of the self-cogradulatory tone of most autobiographies and the slathering praise of too many band books by fan-...-journalists, this modest (read: short) work starts and ends with the reader inside the day-to-day workings of a mid-level journeyman band, warts and all. Best of all (or, worst of all, depending upon your point of view), this isn't so much a book about Mott The Hoople and their music as it is a look at the human realities of what life on the road was like for the guys in the band, or most bands like them at that time. It captures perfectly the tone of the time and the atmosphere prevailing in the early '70's. It strips away the facades and breathes life into the rigors, rewards and frustrations of chasing the musical Holy Grail. I first bought this book in London in 1975, and have read and re-read it more times than I can remember. Raw, spontanious and unpretentious, it is funny, sad, touching and rewarding, especially with the hindsight of the band's history immediately after the end of the book. A must read for any music fan, and essential for any one who wishes to understand the period when the music became secondary to the business concerns. I love this book.

Calling a Spade a Spade

A slight but engaging snapshot of a time and situation: being in a struggling British journeyman rock band touring the States in the early 70s. The details concerning pretour pet care, bandmate flying phobia and pawnshop adventuring give us the real behind-the-scenes of life in a working rock band. So now we know what Hunter meant when he sang "It's a mighty long way down rock'n'roll". Some not very pc nomenclature may snap your head back once in a while, but it's an historical document of another time, another place, worth visiting for anyone interested in the rock'n'roll life.

Tops on the Copywriter's "must read" list

There are a ton of books available about how to write copy, and you will learn something from just about any of them. But in that vast array of titles, few do what THE ART OF WRITING COPY by Herschell Gordon Lewis does. This book, if studied and closely followed, will keep the copywriter from writing BAD copy.

Lewis meticulously guides the student through the process of things to avoid doing. Whatever grand idea you've come up with, chances are very good, Mr. Lewis has something to say about it in this book.

If you're like me, many times throughout this book, you'll feel as if Lewis is pointing his rather sarcastic finger directly at you as he uncovers mistakes I know I've made in the past, and probably you have too. But that's okay. The whole purpose of reading such books is to study the craft and hone our skills, right? Sometimes it takes someone like Herschell Lewis to point out our mistakes so we don't keep making them.

Usually in a book like this, I can single out one or two chapters as "favorites." Here, not so much. I loved the whole thing from cover to cover. The format is great, leaving ample margin space for note-taking. There are countless examples of good and mostly bad ad examples to illustrate the points covered. Along the way, the pages are laden with tips, rules and in-your-face quips.

I hesitate to even mention chapters 26 & 27, which are composites of the major lessons covered in the preceding 25 chapters. Please, do yourself a favor. Read the book in its entirety and don't get lazy and skip to the back. You'll lose much of the flavor of the lessons.

This is not a book for someone looking for their first volume on copywriting. Read some of the other fine volumes available first. You are invited to check out my profile where you will find my listmania list "freelance commercial writing 101" that details other volumes to start your study. Read the basics first, then treat this one as "second-tier" study. But by all means, definitely do not delve too deeply into the profession without first studying this volume in detail. This is one of the very best copywriting volumes available.

A useful book, though some fat could be trimmed.

This book is an excellent resource for any writer, professional or not. It gives insight into audience, word selection, and proper (his interpretation) style of writing. Learn the conventions so that when it comes down to breaking them, you will do so KNOWING it, instead of accidentally doing so.

That said, the placement of the graphics was odd, almost never fitting on the page in which they are used to illustrate the point and causing more work for the casual reader. Much of his point goes beyond making it and into flogging it.

That said, the book is darn useful, and will continue to be so for a while. It's timely and fashionable.

Save Yourself $500 ... Buy This Book!

I recently spent $500 on an online copy writing course. I should have spent the $20 on this book first, and saved myself $480.

- Showing you what good copy can do (with many pictures to prove the point)
- Copywriting A to Z (they cover everything)

CONS
- This book is a bit dated. The lessons are timeless, but the examples are pretty old.

About the Author
John H. Dougherty, Jr., MD, is a recognized leader in the evaluation, treatment and management of patients with memory loss. He has spent more than 25 years in neurology, with a focus on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. In 2002, he developed the first online test for physicians to screen patients for symptoms of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Recently, he introduced the COGselftest, an exciting new version of this online assessment—for the general public. In 2004, he co-founded Medical Interactive Education (Medinteract), a health education organization that provides the latest research and information about brain wellness. Dr. Dougherty is the Medical Director of the Cole Neuroscience Center (Memory Disorder Program) at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. He has extensive clinical experience and has held varied leadership roles in the medical field. Dr. Dougherty has served as Co-director of the Brain and Spine Institute at the UT Medical Center and today is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in neurology at UT. Over the past decade he has published numerous articles on dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Dougherty and his associates see more than 3,000 patients with cognitive impairment annually and are involved in multiple clinical trials. Dr. Dougherty earned his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina and his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis. He trained in neurology at Cornell University New York Hospital and completed a two-year fellowship at Cornell in cerebrovascular disease.

Finally, emphasis on brain health!

Dr. Dougherty has written a book every Baby Boomer should own! How enlightening- and encouraging- to begin to understand how good brain health might stave off the onset of the dreaded Alzheimer's! In this easy-to-read book, brain health receives the same emphasis that heart health has enjoyed for decades. Thanks for easy access to a once-confusing (no pun intended) subject.

One of the three most important books ever written on mixology

There's "Setting the Table" by Danny Meyer, to learn about being truly hospitable. There's "The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks" by David Embury, to learn about the theory and practise of mixology. And now there is "Bar Book" by Jeffrey Morgenthaler*.
I've trained about 60,000 bartenders in 60-odd (sometimes very odd) countries in the last 15 years. I've founded Europe's largest bar school as well as an award-winning craft cocktail bar, and if I could go back in time I would give Jeffrey's book to each and every student I've ever had. As it is, I will give it to every student I have from now on.
Jeffrey's research, insight and experience have resulted in a book that will shave years off the time needed to master drink making, leaving more time for professionals to concentrate on creativity and hospitality, and for interested Cocktailians** to concentrate on seducing your neighbours' wives (and husbands) at the excellent cocktail parties you will henceforth be able to effortlessly throw.

Excellent Reference for Home Bartenders

I recently set up a home bar and have been looking for guides that would show the ins and outs of preparing quality cocktails. There seem to be a lot of books out there with recipes, but none of them really get down to the fundamentals of technique. I have even looked into professional bar-tending classes, but they seem to inconvenient and I suspect they focus as much on customer issues and how to crank out the drinks. I typically only have one drink a night: I want it to be a good one!

This book truly delivers. It is beautiful with magnificent photos, it's the right size to sit on a bar shelf and, most importantly, it really gets down to the details of technique. A good example is the chapter on shaking...

About a week ago (before buying this book) I cracked the glass part of my Boston Shaker when trying to release it. It made me realize that I really had no idea how to deal with shaking a cocktail in general. Then along comes Morgenthaler's chapter on shaking. He starts by listing (in detail) the different shakers and how they can be used. He describes (in detail) the brands and qualities of the various shakers and what characteristics you should look for in each type (heavy gauge vs. light gauge steel for example). He then continues with how to grip the Boston Shaker (in detail - are you seeing a pattern yet?) and even how to practice shaking (he has his trainees use rice in the shaker).

In short, this is EXACTLY the sort of information I had been looking for. The book is all about the technique that creates a truly wonderful cocktail. Yes, it includes some great recipes (more can be found on the author's blog) and, yes, it has great pictures and the explanations are well written. But most of all it gets down to the details that you could probably only get if you had a pro working alongside you.
I suspect that there is a lot of great information in this book for even for professional bartenders, but it remains very accessible.

I can guarantee that the pages of my copy will soon be stained with various bitters, spirits and juices.

Mixing better looking, better tasting drinks

When Jeffrey Morgenthaler states that the difference between art and craft is the difference between creating something unique and recreating the same thing, flawlessly, over and over again, you begin to understand his approach to bartending. It's "aiming for the unattainable goal of pure perfection...[T]o those of us who enjoy that sort of thing, it's a Zen practice."

The three elements of cocktails are recipes, ingredients, and technique. This book is entirely about technique: making your drinks look better and taste better, and developing your flair for showmanship behind the bar. Not the Tom Cruise bottle-flipping, poetry-spouting kind of showmanship, but the proper ways of stirring, shaking, zesting, and juicing; of making, storing, and handling ice; making syrups and infusions, arranging garnishes. As you can imagine, this is a pretty daunting course of study, and I haven't even mentioned the section on measurements: speed pouring, free pouring, batching drinks for multiple guests, and -- gasp -- blind pouring exact measures.

Morgenthaler is such a lively, engaging writer that he makes this technical manual interesting even to casual cocktail enthusiasts; if you're planning on mixing drinks for a living, this book just became part of the syllabus.

A hopeful book about the Holocaust is a rare find. Billionaire financier George Soros, the author's son, is known for his optimistic, bold philanthropical support of open societies in post-Communist Eastern Europe. For European Jews, surviving the plague of Nazism that swept the continent in the first half of the 20th century became a test of resourcefulness, ingenuity, and sometimes just plain chutzpah. When the fascists took over Hungary in 1944, Soros was a Jewish lawyer with a family and friends. Under his strong guidance, his family voluntarily ceased to exist as Jews. Forging new identity papers, they adopted the guise of Christians and dispersed themselves throughout Budapest and beyond, dropping out of sight by blending into the background. With humor and wisdom, Soros tells the story of how he and his family managed to live relatively normal lives during the 11 months of fascist occupation, even while many around them were arrested and killed. This is an intelligently written narrative that is both compelling and uncomfortable, an autobiographical account that is like Anne Frank's diary but less poignant and more optimistic: the Soros family did, after all, survive. When the Germans invaded Hungary in March 1944, Soros, a Jewish lawyer in Budapest, acquired fake identities for himself, his wife, their two sons, and his mother-in-law, and he got an architect to renovate a building in which the family could hide. The Russians liberated them in January 1945. This book is the story of how the family survived these 10 months in which more than half of Hungary's Jews perished. Soros was able to find forgers who created false documents--labor permits, military papers, identification cards with photographs, and ration cards--for his family and many of his friends. He later made arrangements to lodge his family and friends in other locations in the city and beyond. While relating his personal experiences, Soros chronicles the fate of less-fortunate Jews living in the ghetto, tormented by overcrowding, filth, and hunger, presenting a graphic account of the life and survival in Nazi-occupied Budapest and a remarkable portrait of this most resourceful man. Masquerade: The Incredible True Story of How George Soro's Father Outsmarted the Gestapo: Purchased at Amazon.com

Masquerade is the true story of how Tivadar Soros, a Jewish lawyer from Budapest obtained false identities for himself, his wife, mother-in-law, and his two sons. They used these false papers from about April of 1944 until early 1945. I was very surprised at this book, it wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. Actually, I thought the book was fantastic. The way the author thought about his and his families survival was just about the opposite of much I have read in surviving the Holocaust. His main idea was not going with the crowd, but to blend in with the crowd. Being a lawyer, the author also had some very good ideas on how to obtain false identities, how police routine would work, he had good contacts, and so on. I think it also helped because the author seemed like a bit of an actor, as many lawyers seem to be. Not a bad thing to be in surviving a world turned completely upside down. One of the things I liked the most, was that the book was written with a real sense of humor. I very much enjoyed reading a book with a very different way of looking at things, which is why I gave it five stars.

A guidebook for tough times from a moral survivor

It's WWII, the Nazis have invaded Hungary, and Hungarian Jewish attorney Tivadar Soros has to somehow keep his wife and sons (including future billionaire George) safe. While others cling to bygone comforts, status, rules and norms that will betray them, Soros understands that the former order is gone and he must stay nimble and alert to keep his loved ones away from firing squads and out of the death camps.

The style is simple, straightforward, and intimate. You get the feeling of a man thinking on his feet in the middle of danger--finding solutions and then abruptly having to abort them and find something new. Even better, you hear the morals and principals that Tivadar relied on to get through the danger.

I liked this book a lot. It's a good read and I think of Tivadar's guidelines in my own tough decisions in life.

A family's survival against the odds

I still wonder whether I would have survived, for how long and under what circumstances, had I been in the position of this family and so many others during the Nazi era. I very much doubt I would have possessed the courage of this or any other family or person. But, as the book indicates, people rise to extraordinary levels when family protection and even survival is at stake. Of course, being a lawyer with substantial financial support (if you can hold on to it) plays an important role in this family's survival, but should in no way negate the extraordinary courage and skills were used to save them from what might have seemed the inevitable fate of so many.

The Best Book Out There for Those Seeking a High (700+) Score on the Math 2 Exam.

I am a Harvard graduate, SAT perfect scorer and professional test-prep tutor with 18 years of experience, and this is my go-to preparation book for the Math 2 SAT Subject Test.

Of course, you should also buy the Official Guide, which includes 2 real tests: The Official SAT Subject Tests in Mathematics Levels 1 & 2 Study Guide

This book includes 7 mock practice tests, including the diagnostic test, along with answer explanations, as well as an in-depth review of the many concepts that are required understanding for the Math 2 SAT Subject Test, and practice questions ("exercises") that pertain to each lesson.

It's also affordable, and the questions are high-level difficulty...which might be a tad unrealistic compared to the actual test, but which provides excellent preparation for the many advanced high-school math topics (up to Pre-Calculus) that might show up on the Math 2 test, such as Functions, Polynomials, Logarithms, Polar Coordinates, Complex Numbers, Vectors, Matrices, etc.

Are the questions perfect? No. Are the answer explanations perfect? No, not even close. But it's the best, most rigorous practice for the Math 2 exam, and includes plenty of helpful math strategy.
